Purpose of the Research

To demonstrate a cost-effective method for quantification of copper ions in water using a smartphone platform

Research Summary

Pollution of water with heavy metals (HMs) is one of the most common environmental problem occurring around the world. Consumption of water with HMs concentration above the WHO limits results in the short and long-term health effects. Especially vulnerable are children living near HMs mining sites. In such areas, contemporary chemical analysis is out of reach due to costs and required expertise. Under international collaborative Africa-Japan SusMine JST project our group have been working on the development of smartphone-enabled method for quantification of copper ions in water sources. With Dr. Rozak strong commitment and Phoom help we were able to establish quantification of copper ions in the range of 2-15 mg/L using smartphone as optical platform.  In April 2024 we demonstrated the method to the students in the Senior Secondary High School in Selebi-Phikwe copper mining town in Botswana. A series of online lectures have been delivered to teach concepts of chemical analysis with smartphones.

Future Prospects

To expand smartphone-enabled chemical analysis to medical diagnostics, emerging pollutants and food security in resource-poor areas. To reach and educate youth in Africa about potential of smartphone analytics.
