Masato Murakami, President

We will start online classes on Monday, May 11 and continue until August 3. I also promise that we will issue credits as usual. In the first semester, the campus is closed to prevent infection with the new coronavirus.
I noticed that some students demanded a reduction in tuition (tuition and facility maintenance fees) due to the unavailability of campus facilities, which attracted the attention of the media. Here, I will tell you the concept of tuition fees at Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT).

SIT will not reduce the tuition and facility maintenance fees. However, in order to accommodate online classes, and to assist the students to prepare an Internet environment, we have decided to provide a 60,000 yen scholarship to all students.
Further欧洲杯足彩app下载_欧洲杯下注平台-【直播*网站】, I have heard that some students have financial difficulties in continuing their studies due to the corona disaster. We have then established scholarships (up to 500,000 yen per person) that do not require repayment. Funds will be provided by donations from faculty, staff, alumni and those who support our idea.
In addition, we plan to expand the SIT Emergency Scholarship and Special Scholarship programs, as well flexibly respond to the selection slots for these scholarships for those with sudden changes in household finances, in order to support students in all aspects of their studies. Information on how to apply will be sent by post or email as appropriate, and the university's website will also provide information on how to apply, so please feel free to apply.

Now, I would like to explain why the University does not reduce the tuition fees.
University fees are set at the total cost of completing education sufficient to earn a bachelor's degree for undergraduate students and master's and doctoral degrees for graduate students.
Therefore, there is no increase or decrease in tuition fees even if the online education system is adopted in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection and to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff. Here it should be born in mind the fact that the university tuition fee is the total amount of money needed to earn university degrees.

Tuition fees include the cost of maintaining the library, athletic facilities, lab equipment etc. At this time, students are not allowed to enter the library or use the athletic facilities due to the their safety to prevent plague infection. However, new books, academic journals, and professional books will still be purchased in the first semester of FY 2020.
In addition, the library regularly purchases electronic journals and e-books (English, Japanese, and multilingual). Due to the restriction of access to the library, we will start home delivery service for book lending and photocopying from June. The library will pay for all the fees for delivery, and photocopies. Further欧洲杯足彩app下载_欧洲杯下注平台-【直播*网站】, we have a full range of e-journals, databases, and e-books that can be viewed anytime, anywhere from home via the university network. We also purchase the software necessary for education and research that is provide for free to students and faculty. These allows faculty to prepare for online classes at home and students to study and do research at home, which is also thanks to the payment of tuition fees.
Currently, the athletic and laboratory facilities are not available. However, the university has a long-term view and plans to build and install the necessary university equipment and facilities. These are done to provide a useful educational and research environment for all students, not to require students who enroll in a particular year to pay for a particular facility. All students are charged the same tuition fee.

The Shibaura Institute of Technology has spent a great deal of money over the past few years to improve the use of ICT in education and research. Fortunately, our university has the highest number of MEXT grants among all universities, including national, public and private universities. SIT is the only private engineering university to have won the Top Global University project gramt, which is also used to help globalize the university.
The development of the SIT chatbot, which is an AI assisted system that answers your questions, is a part of this effort. Now, with the introduction of the Learning Management System (LMS), your learning achievements are recorded automatically, through which you can look back on yourself based on reliable data, manage your goals for each year, and prepare for future career development. The employment of such ICT systems has made online classes much smoother.
In addition, we were able to install the Techno Plaza, which allows students and faculty to freely use state-of-the-art research facilities, while also utilizing research funds obtained by faculty members from outside sources. Currently, the amount of external research funds obtained by faculty members has reached 1 billion yen. This is also being used in your education.

In this way, the university uses its annual tuition fees to improve its educational and research environment from a long-term perspective. In order to overcome the coronavirus adversity, the university has been forced to spend 欧洲杯足彩app下载_欧洲杯下注平台-【直播*网站】 money than usual like installing a new Internet system and improving its internet environments. However, we do not add these extra expenses to the tuition based on the idea that the total cost of the degree should be shared equally.

Of course, we are aware that this year, in particular this semester, is very unusual. SIT places the foremost importance on the health and safety the students, and collaborates with faculty and staff to provide good education and research and to ensure a fulfilling student life.

However, teaching is not a one-way street. It is also important for students to participate, work together and uplift each other in the pursuit of a better education. I have always been saying the importance of faculty-staff-students partnership. The idea is that faculty, staff, and students will work together to make the university a better place through creative mindset.
SIT was ranked 35th among all Japanese universities and 8th among private universities in the Japanese edition of THE's World University Rankings released in March 2020. This is a great achievement for a private technology university. I see this as evidence that the collaboration among faculty-staff-students is on the move.

Under the slogan of "Nobody left behind", the faculty and staff of SIT will work together in collaboration with students to overcome the coronavirus peril. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
